During Exercise is Medicine Month, Move for Health Day is an international event created in 2002 by the World Health Organization to promote physical activity. This May 10th, communities throughout the province are encouraged to make physical activity a priority by finding fun and interesting ways to MOVE!

Last year Healthy Families BC, Legacies Now 2010 and the Province of British Columbia combined their efforts to host a fun, interactive and educational walking challenge designed to promote and improve health through one of the best medicines known to man: Physical Activity!

From August 8th to September 19th, BC residents were challenged to “Walk to Win” in a six-week contest that encouraged walking, mapping and sharing favourite walking routes as well as pictures along the way.

Families or individuals won amazing BC getaway trips, bikes, fitness passes, footwear gift certificates and much more during the AMAZING event.

Children Need to Move More and SIT LESS Every Day!

Last week’s blog introduced the new physical activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines for the early years (0-4).

The main messaging was introduced (i.e. move more and sit less) and the guidelines were discussed in relation to optimal growth and development.

Unfortunately, the discussion on sedentary behaviour and the associated sedentary behaviour guidelines for the early years was limited and that’s the focus of this blog!
