Have you ever heard the expression “monkey see, monkey do”? It refers to a person who imitates another person’s actions by simply watching them. What does this have to do with physical activity? Parents who perform physical activity can greatly influence their children’s physical activity levels. According to the 2014-2015 Canadian Health Measures Survey, only 12% of children (5 to 11 years) and 4% of youth (12 to 17 years) get the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day.

Here in British Columbia our life expectancy is the highest in Canada, and among the best in the world! While that’s great news, we also need to think about how we can add life to years, not just years to life.

Many toddlers and their caregivers struggle with periods of picky eating, and my brother and two-year-old niece are no exception. By the time meals and snacks are over, both are often frustrated. But what can you do if your toddler isn’t eating the meals and snacks you prepare? What if they ask for the same foods over and over again and a tantrum ensues if anything different happens?
